Tom Hanna

Tom Hanna and I Were young poets together In Ithaca, New York, Cornell University, Under twenty when we met. Ambitious, innocent. Both married young. Lost track over the years Yet still remembered That passionate, hopeful time. I received a note: “You're a good poet” And I knew Tom knew I would give The same words Back to him. We began a correspondence As if we were young again With all life's time Ahead of us, Exchanging poems. I'm told now That Tom's last words were, “I should have written more poetry.” Dear friend, A single poem May bring a poet glory, And who can tell What legacy will be ours. At least we can say we knew–– As so many do not–– The deep power That language brings To those who come to it With open, uninstructed hearts.

For Malcolm Margolin 2021

Malcolm, my god, You've caught up to me. Same year, My August to your October. You have found Or redefined Your Jewish heritage In remarkable ways From Yeshiva Bucher To Shaman. And what has old age brought us? Is it the wisdom of Or just the repeated folly? Apparently unable To make up his mind Shakespeare made Polonius An old fool Except when he makes His great fatherly speech. (Someone had to make it In this play of fathers–– Why not him?) Which are we? The Polonius of the speech Or the one who says things like “And in part him; but you may say not well: But, if 't be he I mean, he's ––” Or are we perhaps both At the same time? I love your magnificent Beard. Yeats Said, “Wisdom is a butterfly,” I would perhaps amend that To “Wisdom is a beard”??–– Though I do not mean that In the homoerotic context. Lorca merged the two When he saw Whitman's beard As “full of butterflies.” Perhaps that is where we are At 81. Polonius X 2 Old fools Or wisdom speakers Depending on who, what, where, when, and how.
